So far we've talked about how to choose the best modeling agency for your baby. I've also answered some of the most popular questions I get asked. I hope you've found this info useful so far, as today I want to address the specific topic that's at the back of every mom's mind (every mom looking to get her child into modeling that is).
I want to give you some tips on how to avoid being scammed by rogue baby modeling agencies.
Now, I want to clear up this right upfront - I am in no way saying that every agency out there is out to scam you. On the contrary, just like with every industry, most businesses are there to provide a good service, but there are a few 'bad apples' that give the whole industry a bad name.
Either way, here are some things to keep in mind when looking for a trust-worthy baby modeling agency - they'll help you make a decision.
1. If you get asked to pay the agency fees upfront - beware.
Again this is not a steadfast rule - you have to look at things in context, but this is certainly a reason for discomfort.
Legitimate baby modeling agencies do not require you to pay any fees upfront - not before your baby has been signed up. So if the agency you're considering starts to go down that route - they better have a very good reason...
2. If you get asked to pay for acting classes before you're signed for a project - beware.
Most legit baby modeling agencies will provide the acting classes for free or at a small charge but only after they have signed your baby up for the part - not before. So make sure you don't let yourself be bullied into paying.
3. If the agency you're interviewing asks you to have a professional portfolio done, before you've 'signed on the dotted line'.
You will need photos, but the interview process you are perfectly fine with any pics. In fact most agencies will take their own in-house pics if they like you. Firstly because they have professional photographers, and they need know if your child is photogenic.
But an agency that asks for these upfront should raise the alarms for you.
4. And in general; use your gut feeling - if something doesn't feel right, move on.
If the agency seems evasive when you ask questions, or if they can't seem to provide even one client reference - beware. Use your common sense over and above what I mentioned so far, and you will be fine.
At the end of the day yours and your baby's safety is a priority. Find a baby modeling agency that will look after your best interests, and you'll enjoy the whole journey.
